The Year That Was
2025 was... a lot. The cybersecurity industry saw fundamental shifts that will echo for years.
AI went from buzzword to battleground. Attackers weaponized large language models for more convincing phishing and faster exploit development. Defenders deployed AI for threat detection and response automation. The race is on, and neither side is winning decisively.
Supply chain attacks continued their escalation. The attack surface isn't just your systems anymore—it's every vendor, partner, and open-source dependency in your stack. Trust verification became survival.
Ransomware evolved. Operators got smarter about targeting, timing, and extortion tactics. The affiliate model spread capabilities to ever-smaller criminal groups. Law enforcement scored wins but couldn't stem the tide.
Regulation expanded. California's privacy laws strengthened. Federal agencies pushed new requirements. International frameworks proliferated. Compliance complexity increased even as budgets tightened.
The Soundtrack
Every year has its music. Here are the tracks that defined our 2025:

"Eye of the Tiger" - Survivor: For every incident responder who took the fight to attackers. Every threat hunter who found the needle in the haystack. Every defender who stood between attackers and their targets.
"Changes" - David Bowie: For the industry transformation underway. Old models dying, new ones emerging. The only constant is change—embrace it or be overwhelmed by it.
"I Will Survive" - Gloria Gaynor: For every business that weathered a breach and came back stronger. Every team that recovered from burnout. Every organization that proved resilience isn't just a buzzword.
Looking Ahead
What's coming in 2026? Predictions are dangerous, but here's what we're watching:
AI will mature. The hype cycle will moderate as both attackers and defenders develop practical, sustainable approaches. Expect less talk about AI replacing humans, more focus on human-AI collaboration.
Identity will dominate. As perimeters dissolve and zero trust expands, identity becomes the new control plane. Investments in identity security, authentication, and access management will accelerate.
Regulatory harmonization (maybe). The proliferation of conflicting frameworks is unsustainable. Watch for consolidation around common standards, particularly in privacy and critical infrastructure protection.
Small business focus. The SMB security gap is becoming undeniable. Insurers, regulators, and market forces will push more resources and attention toward protecting the businesses most at risk.
