Orange County businesses face sophisticated cyber threats every day. Phishing campaigns target employees. Social engineering attacks exploit trust. Ransomware operators probe networks looking for weaknesses. And the difference between a near-miss and a catastrophe often comes down to whether an employee recognizes the attack.
That's why we created the OC Data Defender Challenge.
What Is the Challenge?
The OC Data Defender Challenge is a regional cybersecurity competition for Orange County businesses. Teams from participating organizations compete in simulated security scenarios, testing their ability to recognize threats, respond to incidents, and protect data.
This isn't a technical capture-the-flag competition for security professionals. It's designed for regular employees—the people who receive phishing emails, answer support calls, and make decisions every day that affect security.
How Teams Compete
Individual Challenges: Each team member completes individual security scenarios. Phishing recognition, social engineering defense, secure password practices, and incident identification. Points accumulate based on decisions and response time.
Team Exercises: Teams work together on complex scenarios that require coordination. A simulated breach investigation. An incident response tabletop. A security policy review. These exercises build team-based security thinking.
Regional Leaderboard: Scores from all participating organizations roll up to a regional leaderboard. Companies can see how they compare to peers across Orange County. Top performers earn recognition and bragging rights.
Skills Developed
The challenge develops practical skills that translate directly to real-world protection:
- Phishing Recognition: Identifying malicious emails, links, and attachments
- Social Engineering Defense: Resisting manipulation tactics used by attackers
- Secure Practices: Password hygiene, data handling, and access management
- Incident Response: Knowing what to do and who to contact when something goes wrong
